Jane Bower (An Ethnographic Study of the Diffusion Process of
Telemedicine in Scotland) holds a PhD in molecular genetics and worked for 15 years as
a biomedical research scientist at Stanford and Edinburgh Universities and the MRC's Human
Genetics Unit. This work increasingly involved consideration of the problem of applying
the results of research in medicine. In 1989 she was awarded a Royal Society Senior
Fellowship for a comparative study of technology transfer in Japan. Since 1990 her
research has focused on the development and evaluation of novel technologies, for
healthcare and for other high technology industries. In 1997 she left a senior lectureship
at Aberdeen University to become Director of Kinnell Technologies, a small project
management and consultancy organisation specialising in high technology development
projects. She has been principal researcher in a number of science and social science research projects funded by the MRC, the EPSRC, the ESRC, the NHS R&D Executive, Leverhulme, Nuffield, Royal Blind Asylum and Scottish Enterprise, and has published extensively in science, social science and management journals.
