 John Goddard (Space, Place and the Virtual University) has been the Chairman of the Association of Research Centres in the Social Sciences (ARCISS), and a member of the Higher Education Funding Council's Committee on Electronic Information.

He was awarded an OBE in 1986 and the Victoria Medal of the Royal Geographical Society in 1992.
