Sarah Green (Social Contexts of Virtual Manchester)
has carried out six ethnographic fieldwork projects since
1987, within Britain and Greece. Her doctoral work in London began
her interest in ethnographies of large cities and groups generated
out of those kinds of urban conditions, and led to one of the few
recent and detailed ethnographies on lesbian and gay politics in
Europe (1997, Urban Amazons, London: Macmillan). Dr Green has
maintained an ongoing interest both in issues of sexuality and
gender, and the changing political contexts in which identities are
shaped within 'western' cultures. Her subsequent work in Greece on
landscape, borders, ethnicity, and identity has broadened her
experience of issues relating to nationalism and the significance of
place in relation to constructions of the person.

Dr Green's most recent research on the social contexts in which new information and communications technologies are being introduced to Manchester (1998-2000, "Social Contexts of Virtual Manchester"; ESRC's Virtual Society? Program) has also contributed to Dr Green's continued involvement in ethnographies 'at home' and the changing conditions in which people are negotiating their conception of hemselves, particularly the asserted 'globalising' effects of the internet.
