Nicholas Pleace (Virtual Community Care? an Analysis of the Experience of Computer Mediated Social Support) has worked in academic research since 1991. His background is as a social policy researcher, largely working on applied policy research for funders such as the Joseph Rowntree Foundation, Housing Corporation, Department of the Environment, Transport and the Regions, Department of Health, the King's Fund and various local authorities and housing associations. His main areas of interest are in social policy research related to homelessness, housing and community care and social housing management and it is through his work on the nature and design of social support, social care and the delivery of health care to marginalised groups (homeless people) that he became involved in the 'Virtual Community Care' project. As part of his work within the Centre for Housing Policy, within the Department of Social Policy and Social Work at York, he is the computer officer, responsible for CHP's Internet presence. He recently joined the editorial board of the Routledge journal, Information, Communication and Society, as website editor (the site will go live soon at http://www.infosoc.co.uk/).
