Groupware: Computer mediated meetings and the Mediation of Memory

Despite its claims to democratise the workplace, uptake of computer mediated communication (CMC) and groupware has been variable.

Research shows that:

  • CMC can enhance or diminish the standing of an individual within an organisation.
  • Email is forwarded throughout organisations, stored up for future use and can even increase the number of face-to-face meetings required to resolve disputes generated by its use.

The findings of this research project have important implications for social scientists and designers alike.
