Re-shaping the Voluntary and Community Sectors in the Information Age

More than 80% of the organisations surveyed have adopted ICTs in some way, others anticipate doing so soon.

Research findings have identified a significant increase in the speed and sophistication of responses relevant to public policy development and intervention. However, there is also a disparity in the application of these technologies to critical activities.

Changes are largely socially shaped.

  • 'Volunteer staffed' organisations remain committed to locality.
  • 'Professionally staffed' organisations have yet to comprehend and engage to full effect with the competitive regimes in which they now exist.

The employment of ICT personnel in a development role is certainly significant, but portions of the voluntary and community sectors are failing to fully exploit the new technologies.
